- Keep your coat away from fires and radiators at all times - direct heat will cause the leather to dry and crack.
- If your fur gets wet, hang it to dry in a cool place with air circulating round it. A little rain or snow will not harm a fur if it is dried in this manner immediately. Don't put your fur away until it is thoroughly dry.
- Do not comb or brush furs - just shake them out.
- Use a reasonably broad-shouldered padded hanger when you put your coat in the wardrobe and allow plenty of space around it to prevent crushing and creasing.
- Never store or hang a fur in a plastic bag or any other cover, or the air will not circulate and the fur will eventually become dry.
- It is not advisable to spray perfume directly on to your fur. The alcohol will dry the leather and stiffen the hair and it is difficult to remove the perfume even by cleaning.
- It is unwise to pin flowers or jewelry on your fur, since they could damage or flatten the hairs.
- Never store fur with moth balls near it or in a cedar closet, as the fur will pick up those smells and over time it will smell, too. Keep your fur away from light. Leave room on either side of the coat because fur needs to breathe to stay supple and healthy looking.
- Take your fur off of the hanger by slipping your hand under the shoulder and gently sliding off each side. Never pull it off the hanger as this will tear the lining and the fur itself. when you put your coat on, protect your neck area with a scarf, make up will ruin the coat's lining. It can also discolor the fur.
- Your fur coat and your car, best friends? Probably not. Furs don't do well with friction or crushing, both of which they experience in your car. Use common sense when sliding into the seat. So you're not too hard on your fur. To avoid a telltale flattened bottom print on your fur, don't sit on it if possible, or at least not on the same spot consistently. Shake out any spots like that on your fur when you exit your vehicle. On long drives, take off your fur and wear it over you like a blanket, if you need to keep warm.
- Keep your fur in mind when you're on the move. Double-check your insurance policy to make sure you're covered in case of loss at a restaurant or while traveling. At a restaurant, if the cloak room looks suspicious or overcorwded, don't check your coat. Don't hang it on a hook or coat tree. Fold it neatly on a chair at your table and cover with a napkin.
